About the Author
Alan Revere holds a unique position in the jewelry community, with one foot firmly planted as a master goldsmith and award-winning designer and the other as one of the country s most prominent jewelry educators. After earning degrees in both psychology and sculpture, Revere s passion led him to Germany, where he trained under some of the 20th century s most celebrated goldsmiths and designers. Returning to California with skills rarely taught in the United States, Mr. Revere was asked to share what he had learned with other jewelers and students. In 1979, he founded the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, now one of the country s foremost jewelry training programs. Alan Revere is past president of the American Jewelry Design Council and founder of the Contemporary Jewelry Design Group. In addition to designing and selling thousands of pieces of jewelry, Mr. Revere has created instructional books, articles and videos for jewelry makers. It is no wonder that Alan Revere has been called, A master s master.

Basically the 2nd edition of Revere's out of print "Professional Goldsmithing" and that is not a bad thing!A couple of new projects but basically the same photos and text from "Professional Goldsmithing", once again not a bad thing!Generally I'd give this 5 stars plus as it is the single best starting point for any jewelry maker of any level. The learning curve may be steep but instruction is quite clear. Numerous excellent step-by-step photos accompany each project. The projects are classic, not examples of this recent horrible art jewelry fad.SO why have I dinged it? Couple of reasons. While the book is over all very elegant the section on tools is some real crumby drawings, seems like an after thought. There is no good discussion of the single most important tool; the jewelers bench. And also I'd swear many of the photos were originally gold jewelry and simply desaturated to look like silver for this "Professional Jewelry Making" volume.The book DESERVED an upgrade on the tools and at least a couple of pages on the jewelers bench.These complaints are nit-picking I agree but none the less I found annoying in the original volume and was disappointed to find no effort put forth in this offering to improve.But I would still recommend this book to pretty much any jeweler and even crafts person interested in learning classic jewelry making.
Love this book! Though it's not a book for beginners. Each project has detailed explanations/descriptions with supporting color photos. His projects start relatively easy and seem to get progressively more technical from a forged bracelet to a ball clasp, hollow ring, square linkage, etc. I love this book so much that I immediately ordered his new stone setting book.
At first I thought the price of this book was steep, but as soon as I started reading it, I realized it was worth every dollar I paid for it. Alan has a great way of teaching through making projects. Each piece of jewelry teaches you something new, and the advanced projects draw upon some of the earlier techniques you learned from easier/beginner projects to make some pretty complicated pieces of jewelry. I've already made the forged pearl ring (I used sterling instead of brass or gold) and made the tension backings for earring posts. You will learn how to make round and square tubing, curb chains, and even rope chains, for starters. If you want to learn how to make a lot of jewelry components you thought you had to order, take a look at this book. Alan even describes why you may have a need to make these things even if it doesn't seem cost effective for your business. Highly recommended!
If you are looking for a book to start or advance jewelry techniques, whether you are student or experienced jeweler, look no further. This book is comprehensive guide, including formulas and tables for jewelers, explaining tools, best practices AND it has dozen of projects from simpler to complex ones with step by step, easy to read description and photos at each steps to guide you to a successful completion. You would be given access to Alan Revere’s 40 years of goldsmithing experience and teaching and he would walk you through creating : bangles, crochet chains, forged rings, basket pendants, solitaire cluster rings, etc. I cannot recommend it more. I love it and refer to this amazing book very often. A must read for anyone making jewelry!
This book is very well organized. It has the seemingly requisite primer of tools and metals. For the learner, there are about three dozen projects to follow step-by-step. For more advanced metalsmiths, you can always review something you do only occasionally or refine a technique that you are already using. Forewarning, there is nothing on stone setting, repousse, or the myriad of texturing and advanced forming techniques. This is strictly construction and mechanisms. Buy it for that reason.
What a wonderful book, and just beautiful, too ! I never got the chance to attend a Revere Class ( sadly ) , but having Alan Revere's Professional Jewelry Making book is so much fun. I plan to try many of the projects. The photos, captions and directions are clear and concise. Excellent publication!!
If you are interested in making jewelry from sheet metal, wire, and bar stock (as opposed to casting) you will love this book. It has the clearest set of instructions and illustrations that I have seen and I have read numerous titles. The examples are interesting, illustrative of techniques, and varied. If you are new to jewelry fabrication this is a "'must have" book that will answer many of your questions.
Pliers indicate work and this book teaches in words and pictures how to craft jewelry and the pitfalls. I love this book. It tells me things I need to know as a beginner that would cost me time and materials if I did not have this resource. Every hobbist should have a copy, those more advanced really must have a copy.
