The book is chock full of examples - many of which are well known corporate failures - where the clues to future problems might have been ferreted out by a careful reading of the preceding annual letters. LJR offers a methodical approach for evaluation those annual letters (which is also the basis of her consulting and advisory business). Although some of her analysis leaves you wondering whether it has benefited substantially from hindsight, the book is well worth reading by those who are looking for the clues to future company (and stock price) performance.

This is a book that is designed to convey investing fundamentals. I work in finance as an investor and have read all of the mainstream investing books, including "The Intelligent Investor." Investing books can be dense, but I found that "Investing Between the Lines" did a great job of conveying the necessary information without over complicating it. The chapters are laid out and organized well making the book easy to reference back to. It is also a quick read; I was able to get through the entire book on a domestic plane ride.

Very good book, full of insights. The book presents a method of linguistic analysis of CEO letters to shareholders. The method helps assess CEO character and fits nicely into the five C's of credit analysis. I suppose the same method can be used to assess any statements made by executives, i.e. newspaper interviews or statements during conference calls. My only question is how to code it so that the computer does all the work, otherwise reading and interpreting the CEO letters will require a lot of highly skilled effort and therefore very high costs.

Great insights! Rittenhouse has done great research which we can all learn from. My key criticism is that the discussion of her CEO letter scoring techniques are spread throughout the book, and are not summarized in any one place. It would take days or weeks of study for anyone to be able to replicate her technique. The book will not be enough for you to do this at home.

Great book. Gets one thinking while reading investment information.

Disappointingly there is little to take away from this book that is of practical value to the professional or part time investor. The author failed to link any of the subject matter to delivering more successful investment outcomes. In fact, the book was so poorly connected to enhancing investment outcomes that the author discredits what should otherwise be an important component of investment analysis. Further undermining the credibility of the author were some blatant and basic errors - see the erroneous definition of 'book value' on page 77. Lastly and as others have pointed out, the book reads more like an advertising piece for the author's real business as the reader is bludgeoned on just about every page by the constant reference to his business. Do not waste your time with this book.

So many books have been written on how to analyze a company, but so few have been written on how to analyze the person in control of a company. Investing Between the Lines solves that problem and provides readers with a comprehensive system to analyze management using CEO communications. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to make smarter and better informed investment decisions.

Toni Buzzeo (www.tonibuzzeo.com) is a children's book author and reviewer and retired school library media specialist. She speaks at national, state, and regional library and reading conferences and does author visits at schools across the country. Among her many books are My Bibi Always Remembers and Just Like My Papa, companions to this book, and the Caldecott Honor-winning and New York Times best-selling One Cool Friend, ilustrated by David Small. She lives in Massachusetts. Mike Wohnoutka (www.mikewohnoutka.com) grew up in Spicer, Minnesota. His dad, an engineer, would bring home reams of paper with highway plans on one side. Mike filled the blank side of the sheets with drawings of race cars, snowmobiles, baseball players, super heroes, everything he was interested in. In high school his art teacher encouraged him to pursue art as a career. He graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a B.F.A. in illustration. I bought this book for my daughter, who LOVES another Toni Buzzeo book (Little Loon and Papa). This one is just as cute but a longer read than Little Loon. At 18 months, my daughter doesn't have the patience to sit through more than one or two sentences per page OR more than maybe 10 pages. I still think this is an excellent book and I know she will like it more when she's a little older.The book is about a little giraffe named Twiga who is trying to be independent but keeps running into trouble (falling in puddles, ant bites, etc.) I really like the message and Twiga's sunny outlook on things. Also, the illustrations are gorgeous!

Momma loves reading this with baby. I'm pretty sure it taste better than it looks as far as our son is concerned.

This is a perfect book for young children - it is about the theme of young children wanting to explore the world and parents who are always checking to be sure they are safe. My granddaughter loved it and we read it many, many times.

Very cute book. It went perfect with the giraffe shower theme.

A nice book. Not our favorite, but it’s sweet.
